An Obsidian vault is the Lab. It is the file-first drafting room of the estate. Notes are plain markdown on your own disk, the graph shows the shape of your thinking, and nothing here is published.
The Lab is where raw sources arrive. Highlights, transcripts and clippings flow into the vault, and an agent weaves them into notes. The rule that keeps those inflows honest is Raw and Derived.
The Lab is a mode of work, not a claim of ownership. A vault can be private to one person or a shared git repository. The Game of 42 vault is a drafting room shared by its players.
Every serious vault carries a charter. The charter tells any agent that opens the folder how this vault works and what may cross to the Commons. See Vault Charter.
When a note is ready to meet others it crosses to The Commons as a wiki page, keeping its trail. The crossing is described in Fork Across Borders.
