The Babel Fish is a small translator that lets three wiki species understand each other. Feed it a page in one dialect — an Obsidian note, a TiddlyWiki tiddler, or a federated wiki page — and it speaks the same page in another.
It has one native tongue. Everything translates through the federated wiki page of title, story and journal, because that is the richest of the three forms. Typed items carry the content. The journal carries the history.
Nothing translated up loses its original. When a tiddler or a note becomes a page, the untranslated source file rides along as an asset of the page. The page is the readable view. The asset is the file of record.
Nothing translated down loses its way back. When a page becomes a note, anything the note cannot express is carried invisibly inside it, so the page can be rebuilt whole on return.
The fish never swims on a schedule. It is picked up and used one deliberate crossing at a time. The rules of the crossing are set out in Fork Across Borders.
It descends from The Content Importer, an earlier tool that taught web pages to become wiki pages.
